Blackstoun United v Glasgow West
4-0
K.O. 2pm Ferguslie Park Sport Centre (Astro) Referee Gerry Reid
We didn’t know anything about this team so we weren’t quite sure what to expect, as it turned out they weren’t as good as some of our previous opponents so it wasn’t as much of a test as it could have been which is probably just as well because a number of our guys were unavailable to day for various reasons. So never one to look on the negative side of things, this gave us an opportunity to try out some new players. Unfortunately it kept raining off an on so I wasn’t able to take many notes of how the game panned out. The game wasn’t all us I have to say they did have a few chances to score but poor finishing on their part allowed us to record only our second clean sheet at the back in our pre season friendly’s.
As I said I have no notes so it’s the bare minimum of a report.
In the 20th minute after some good work down our right wing Gary Stevenson gets in a brilliant shot only to be matched by an excellent save from their keeper. Ryan takes the subsequent corner and picks out the in rushing Stuart Witherspoon (Spoony) to connect with a crush header to make it one nil. 1-0.
4 min’s later Kevin Mc. made it 2-0.
In the 40th minute a long ball comes in it bounces in their box their keeper comes for the ball but Ryan is the fastest to react to the high bounce. He jumps up and head lobs the keeper who was left stranded. I think he bottled the challenge and that’s why he didn’t get there on time. 3-0.
The first half was good for us, we got the goals but just as importantly for us the new boys in John Moran, Stuart Piggott and Robert Park gelled well into the team.
Second Half
Although we had a lot of chances in the second half to add to the score it wasn’t until the 84th min that we finally got the break through. We had worked our way into their box there had been a couple of scrambled shots on goal but all rebounding until it fell to Ryan. Ryan gets in a half shot that that comes of Gary Hyndman’s backside and goes in 4-0. Gary comes away with a big smile saying “I made an ars of that one.”
As the second half score line would suggest it wasn’t a walk over in the second half to their credit they did try to make more of a game of it, but it wasn’t until the last ten minutes or so that they got any real penetration, this was due mainly to the moving around of personnel on the park which as always upsets the continuity of the play
It was good to have Smudger back in the back line who worked well with Spoony who also had a good game.
